Sexual abuse affects nearly one of every three women in America, and close to one of every five men. Pornography consumption is increasing rapidly, and its expansion via the Internet is bringing profound tragedy directly into the homes of countless families. Sexual addiction is now recognized as a serious problem not just for men but also for women. Sexual dysfunction is a source of silent pain within far more families than is realized. And what the media and modern society don’t talk about is the heavy weight of self blame and guilt born silently inside, often for years and even decades, as the debilitating aftermath of elective pregnancy loss.

Ability to form lasting relationships is affected by these very hurtful experiences, and existing relationships suffer increasing strain and even rupture. Physical symptoms, emotional ill health, spiritual confusion, sexual dysfunctions, marital tensions.. all these and more are frequently attributed directly to traumatic and emotionally unfinished experiences, both recent and from childhood.

Thankfully, God promises help and healing for life’s tragedies. Emotional wholeness, relational rejuvenation and spiritual rediscovery of God’s unconditional love are all possible for those willing do the necessary hard work in pursuit of emotional and spiritual recovery from childhood trauma.

An ordained Elder in the Southern Michigan Conference of the Free Methodist Church or North America, Rev. Thomas M. Ball, Ed.D., D.Min., retired in 2000 as an Emeritus Professor from Spring Arbor University to assist adult survivors of childhood abuse find healing and wholeness in their lives. While continuing to teach part-time in SAU’s MA in Counseling degree program, Rev. Ball recently rejoined the staff of Dove Counseling and is now accepting individual and couples’ appointments.
